STORING YOUR WALNUTS

There is a big taste disparity between a fresh walnut and a walnut which has been sitting around for a while (like 1-2 years). For those of you who have been enjoying our fresh organic walnuts, you are quite aware of what we're talking about.

Since we sell seasonally, we want to make sure you know what do to with your walnut bounty!

Walnuts contain oil and if not properly stored, can easily turn rancid. The oil in the walnuts begin to break down over time when exposed to light, moisture, or heat. This is one of the reasons why most walnuts you find in stores taste completely different than fresh ones.

Storage is a big part of keeping your walnuts fresh and tasty. We bet you've never even considered storing your walnuts in any place other than in your pantry.

The fridge or freezer is a walnut's best friend.

We recommend placing your walnuts in the fridge or freezer as soon as they arrive. When placing walnuts in cold storage, they'll need to be kept sealed and in an airtight container (or our packaging). It's also best practice to keep them away from other foods as walnuts can easily absorb moisture and odors (fish, onions, etc) from the fridge. These odors can impact the flavor of your walnuts.

CORKY'S NUTS can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 6 months and in the freezer for up to 1 year. In the summer months, we are known to eat them directly out of the freezer as they are quite lovely when they're cold and crispy!

If you have any questions about what to do or how to store your walnuts, please contact us at info@corkysnuts.com.
